#1. You’re Comfortable in the Skin You’re In

combating midlife negativity

As a young woman, maybe you were like one of the many hundreds of thousands of women who didn’t feel quite comfortable navigating their landscape. Yes, you were ‘grown’ — a bona fide adult — but there was this thing nagging at the back of your brain. An uncertainty that muddled the way you thought about yourself. Perhaps others saw it in you, this diminished sense of self that you wore like an ill-fitting pencil skirt.

And now? Whoa, look at you now! You’ve grown into that skirt, filled it out in all the right places, and you know you look good. You know why? Because you’re relatively happy with you.

Whether it’s lusciously dark, pecan brown, tawny beige, cool alabaster or any other shade in between, in front of and behind . . .  you’re comfortable in the skin you’re in.

To be sure of yourself, to appreciate the woman that you have become, to find comfort in your own skin — this is a beautiful gift you can give yourself in midlife.

It is one of the blessings, I agree, though I do think we need to work at it, and have help along the way. But oh, the bliss of self-acceptance! I celebrate the good things about midlife, too, in my writing. Good to have met you!

Hi Lucy. Thanks for kicking off the conversation! Yes, it is a blessing. And you’re right, being comfortable in our own skin is something that some have to work at. But the journey of self-understanding and getting to know ourselves is well worth the end result. Thanks!

I think I’ve been comfortable with who I am most of my life. But the irony is that now my skin is NOT my best attribute, so I
wear long sleeves and pants a lot. It’s part of aging. I should have listened better to the sun block crowd. Now I can’t do
without it. But as for who I AM, I like myself. What’s inside is what counts and that is what you are saying. THANKS.

Exactly, Beth! Love yourself for the woman you have become. Yes, you may embark on change, but at your base, you need to love the woman that you are and be comfortable with who you are. Thanks for chiming in!
